Day 4 Ponte de Lima to Rubiaes (16.8 km) Sept. 6th

We are sitting on the balcony of our hostel outside Rubiaes listening to the tinkle of the sheep bells in the adjoining pasture. The sun is still warm, although at 6:30 it is starting to descend, but the day did not start out quite so pleasant...

The day started with my sitting at the window of our room in Ponte de Lima sipping my bica (espresso) and contemplating the rain coming down as we were preparing to leave for our walk to Rubiaes.

Typical hotel breakfast in Portugal: juice, ham and cheese on bun, yogurt, sweet cakes and coffee of some kind. Our hotel menu listed 12 different types of coffee...

Saying goodbye to our hostess at the Mercearia Hotel.
Surprisingly the rain subsided as we left town and began our walk.

We did have some occasional rain as we made the 300 metre climb on a surprisingly rugged trail before descending into sunshine and our hostel, O Repouso do Peregrino. Very nice accommodations and we were welcomed by Silvia Castro, who immediately laundered our dirty clothes and hung them out to dry. As there was nowhere close by for a meal, transportation was arranged to a nearby restaurant, where we enjoyed a very filling and satisfying pilgrim meal.

Arriving at our hostel.

Today we started seeing a lot of other pilgrims on the road.

Tomorrow we should be crossing into Spain at the end of the day.
