San Gimignano to Monteriggioni (30 km)

After arriving in San Gimignano yesterday and devouring the gelato that we so justly deserved and getting our rooms at Casa Aladina, we set out to wander the streets a little and then stop for a bite to eat.  We stopped for some bruschetta just outside the city walls at Caffe Giardino There was some cool jazz playing in the back room where we ate.  The food was good, and the conversation and the wine flowed so well that we decided to stick around and have the lasagne for dinner there, rather than go looking elsewhere.  The food was all prepared by the owner, Sandro, who along with his family run this small caffe.  Sandro even makes his own bread.  We asked them to make up our sandwiches for the next day.  They opened at 7am, so that was our first stop this morning, for breakfast as well as picking up our sandwiches.

We left San Gimignano, leaving its medieval towers behind and set out on the road to another famed medieval city, the walled city of Monteriggioni.

Of course, we payed too much to sleep inside the walled city at a B&B, but sleeping inside the walls of Monteriggioni was an unforgettable experience.
